China says it’s closer to achieving “full reunification” with Taiwan after it was handed over another five-year term to the President Xi Jinping.
What happened: “We are closer than ever in history — and we are more confident and empowered than ever — to realize national rejuvenation,” he said Ma Xiaoguanga spokesman for China’s Bureau of Taiwan Affairs, reported Bloomberg.
Ma’s comments came in response to a question about a keynote speech by Xi at the start of the Communist Party Congress.
The spokesman is said to have said: “The full reunification of our country must be achieved and without a doubt can be achieved.”

Why it matters: Ma has not provided a timeline for this reunification with Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing considers a breakaway territory, Bloomberg noted.
Xi said at the congress that China would do so never renounce the right to use force to solve the Taiwan question, but to seek a peaceful solution.
The Chinese President said, “The historic wheels of national reunification and national rejuvenation are rolling forward, and the full reunification of the motherland must be achieved!”
