- AstraZeneca Plc AZN reported Topline Data from the phase 3 study MESSINA Fasenra (benralizumab) in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) aged 12 years and older.
- Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is characterized by the abnormal presence of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in the inner lining of the esophagus. Patients have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), pain, food residue, and anxiety.
- The data showed that Fasenra (benralizumab) did not meet either of the two dual-primary endpoints.
- Fasenra demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in histological disease remission compared to placebo, but no change in dysphagia symptoms.
- The study involved 210 patients who received either Fasenra or placebo at four-week intervals.
- The safety and tolerability profile of Fasenra in the study was consistent with the drug’s known profile.
- Fasenra is currently approved as add-on maintenance therapy for severe eosinophilic asthma in the US, EU, Japan and other countries, and is approved for self-administration in the US, EU and other countries.
- Price promotion: AZN shares are up 1.25% to $55.87 during the premarket session last check Tuesday.
