The richest man in the world helps a war-torn country with satellite communications. That helpfulness has sparked controversy, and now a competitor backed by another billionaire has spoken out.
What happened: SpaceX and Tesla Inc TSLA chairman Elon Musk provided Starlink satellites to Ukraine as the country was under attack from Russia.
Musk and his company SpaceX funded the satellites in Ukraine, a fact that led to a call to the US Department of Defense for help with funding. musk withdrew the application and said SpaceX will continue to fund the operation.
kymeta, a rival of Starlink, talks about Starlink satellites used by Ukraine. Kymeta Chief Development Officer Bill brands criticized Starlink in comments shared by Bloomberg law.
Marks said the threat to shut down Starlink services in Ukraine could be a violation of international law and an “egregious” move.
“There must be blood on his hands for that,” Marks said.

Why it matters: The Defense Ministry is considering funding other efforts by other satellite communications companies for deployment in Ukraine.
Efforts come like reports surfaced that Starlink has not worked in certain parts of Ukraine in recent efforts against Russia.
Kymeta is heavily funded by Bill Gateswho First Invested in the company in 2016 and then again in 2020. Other investors belong in Kymeta intel sat and Lux Capital.
According to the report, Kymeta has donated and sold satellite technology to Ukraine.
An investment in Gates’ company could focus on a future for rural areas. Kymeta CEO Walter Berger said Gates’ investment in Kymeta began with the company’s potential to “democratize connectivity.”
Kymeta has existing contracts with the Department of Defense and is also in discussions with other countries for services.
