What happened: Washington is paying close attention to the threat China poses to the island nation and the head of US naval operations Admiral Mike Gilday sid that the US military must prepare for the possibility of an invasion of Taiwan by China.

“If we’re talking about the 2027 window, I think that has to be a 2022 window or possibly a 2023 window,” Gilday said Atlantic Council, according to to the Financial Times. “I don’t mean to be alarming at all … it’s just that we can’t wish that away.”
Gilday’s comments came days later Anton BlinkenThe US Secretary of State, speaking at the Stanford University forum on Monday, said that “Beijing is committed to pursuing reunification [with Taiwan] on a much faster timeline.”
On 20 National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi also said China will never give up the right to use force to resolve the Taiwan issue. “Resolving the Taiwan issue is up to the Chinese people, and the decision is up to the Chinese people,” Xi said.
The US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman discuss China and tensions surrounding recent missile launches by Taiwan and North Korea at meetings with Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Tokyo next week, reported Reuters.
