Apple loses key design chief and worries about its AR – Press Release

  • Apple Inc AAPL Hardware design lead, Evans Hankey, will leave three years after taking office, Bloomberg reported.
  • Hankey will remain with Apple for the next six months while the company is yet to name a successor. One possible candidate to take the lead is Richard Howarth, 9 To 5 Mac reports.
  • Howarth briefly held the role of Industrial Design VP from 2015 to 2017, at the same time that Jony Ive was “promoted” to Chief Design Officer.
  • Hankey was appointed to the post in 2019 to replace Jony Ive, who was the company’s iconic design chief for two decades.
  • Before assuming her current position as VP of Industrial Design, Hankey spent several years at Apple reporting to Ive. She has since reported to COO Jeff Williams.
  • Her imminent exit marks the first time Apple has been without a de facto design chief since co-founder Steve Jobs retook control of the company and appointed Ive for the job in the late 1990s.
  • Lots of CEOs Tim Cooks Critics have noted that he repeatedly tasked operations managers with making critical decisions, reducing the design group’s contributions.
  • Apple was working on major new devices, including a mixed reality headset for next year and augmented reality glasses. There is also the possibility of an electric car.
  • Price promotion: AAPL shares traded 2.93% higher to $147.61 on the last check Friday.
