The threat of a nuclear conflict has increased in recent months as the war in Ukraine continues. A former US security adviser speaks about the potential impact of nuclear weapons.
What happened: With Elon Musk and other hit the alarm that nuclear war may be imminent, a former national security adviser said the United States should be aware of the consequences of such actions.
Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton said the US should clarify that the Russian President Wladimir Putin would “sign a suicide note” if he actually uses nuclear weapons.
Bolton shared his thoughts on British radio station LBC’s “Tonight with Andrew Marr,” as reported by Business Insider.
The former national security adviser specifically stressed that the US should announce what will happen to stop Putin from using nuclear weapons, rather than worrying later about what to do in retaliation.
“We have to be clear that if Putin ordered the use of a tactical nuclear weapon, he would sign a suicide note,” Bolton said. “And I think that’s what it takes to deter him when he gets into extreme circumstances.”
Bolton said the US should make sure it’s clear they will hold anyone who uses nuclear weapons accountable.
The former national security adviser said while some would argue we can’t reach Putin, history shows the US is fulfilling missions.
“You can ask Qassem Soleimani in Iran what happens if we decide someone poses a threat to the United States.”
Soleimani was an Iranian general who was killed in a US airstrike in 2020.
