Yasmin Beydoun, speech-language pathologist in Toronto, says: “I have had patients with significant swallowing disorders who left the hospital without community follow-up because they had no status and therefore no health insurance. This is a huge health risk if they cannot eat and drink safely, they are at greater risk of choking, lung infections and even malnutrition. These patients do not have the same access to medical care as citizens. Saving lives means ensuring permanent residency for all migrants, including undocumented migrants.”
