The 8th Annual Indigenous Peoples Day in New York The event returned to Randall’s Island Park on Sunday and Monday. The event included musical performances, spoken word artists, dancers and speakers, as well as food, craft shops and included prayer ceremonies.
For thousands of years, Indigenous communities care about the environment, protect their lands, respect wildlife and use traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Their continued stewardship and preserved ancient knowledge of Indigenous Peoples worldwide was honored in a water ceremony on the Harlem River at sunrise on the morning of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, organizers of the event said.
“Indigenous peoples own 25% of the world’s land surface. Year after year, thousands of people from all walks of life enjoy the outdoor event, held in the country’s largest city on an ancient river. It has been proven that spending time in nature, disconnecting from the digital world, offers significant benefits for cognitive and mental health, improvement in mood and emotional well-being,” said the organizer Chenae Bullock, member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation and CEO of Moskehtu Consulting. Bullock is also the CEO of Little Beach Harvesta joint venture between Shinnecock Nation and TILT Holdings Inc (OTC: TLLTF).
Since the event started, it has served as an integral podium for changemakers and earth protectors. Past speakers have included Pua casewho is actively leading the charge for protection Maunakea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii and the tallest mountain in the world, from the construction of a giant telescope. Legendary activists like Standing Rock’s Historic Preservation Officer and founder of Sacred Stone Camp, the late LaDonna Brave Bull Allardwho led the resistance against the Dakota Access pipelineparticipated in 2019.
