Conversations of the former US President donald trump throws his hat in the ring for the 2024 presidential election have appeared in the press from time to time.
What happened: Trump may be forced to announce his candidacy Maggie Haberman, New York Times White House correspondent and author of the new book “Confidence Man: The Making Of Donald Trump And The Breaking Of America,” said in one interview with CBS News.
When asked if Trump would run again, Haberman said, “With the caveat that I don’t know and that I could prove him wrong, I think he’s backed himself into a corner where he needs to run.”
Why it matters: Haberman added, “I think he needs the protection that running for president (he thinks) would give him to fight what he calls a ‘witch hunt’ investigation.”
Trump faces multiple lawsuits and investigationsincluding the Justice Department investigation into the Mar-a-Lago documents case, the New York City Attorney’s lawsuit accusing the former president of financial fraud, the Georgia state investigation into election interference, and the House Select Committee investigation on the January 6 riots.
“So much of his identity now is being a politician,” Haberman said.
Therefore, Haberman said, they expect Trump to run for office in 2024. Haberman also raised the possibility that Trump might not stay the course even if he declares his candidacy.
