Omaha-born iconic leader Malcolm X is getting a lot of attention these days.
On September 12, he was elected the newest inductee into the Nebraska Hall of Fame. He will be the first African American to be selected for this honor in the state.
Luckily, Opera Omaha will be producing the opera this November X, the life and times of Malcolm X, by Anthony Davis and Thulani Davis, which has been co-produced with the county’s leading opera houses and will be performed in Omaha before going to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Although selected for induction by Opera Omaha nearly two years ago, the forthcoming production promises to be a fitting cultural event to celebrate Malcolm’s recent Hall of Fame selection.
For JoAnna LeFlore-Ejike, executive director of the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, and Leo Louis II, its board chairman, the synergy of that moment has lasted 25 years.
“It’s a whole community win. That doesn’t always happen to have a community win,” LeFlore-Ejike said. “Anyone can celebrate.”
The Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, located at Malcolm’s birthplace in North Omaha, serves to bring residents together to remember the legacy of Malcolm X through tours, educational programs, town hall forums and special events. Opera Omaha works with the Foundation to offer a variety of events, talkback sessions, and concerts centered around the production in hopes of encouraging the community to engage with and explore the history and community heritage of the play .
Opera Omaha will host three sessions of Opera in Conversation, taking place before and after the opera. These conversations serve to encourage an open conversation about the play and the local significance of Malcolm’s message and work. Also in attendance will be Geoff Pope, Super Bowl winner and expert on Malcolm X.
