What happened: Filing an impeachment against the President Joe Biden, Trump hinted that he is keeping gas prices artificially low ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, video clips of the speech shared on Twitter showed.
The ex-president noted that the strategic oil reserve is at an all-time low, adding that he has replenished it. “Now he’s using that to keep prices as low as possible right before the election,” Trump said.
“And right after the election it will double and rise higher than anyone ever believed.”
He also noted that the strategic reserves are intended to be used for military purposes during a war. The reserves should not be used to keep election prices down, he added.

Why it matters: US gas prices have fallen since peaking at $5.02 a gallon in June amid the summer driving season. The nationwide average gas price for regular gasoline was $3,678 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association. The White House tweeted Saturday that gas prices across the country have fallen for 95 straight days.

The fall in gas prices was the main reason for the Inflationary pressures eased in July and Aug.
Higher gas prices can affect consumer spending, thereby hampering economic growth.
