Suriname is considering legal action against the producers of the South Korean hit Netflix Inc NFLX series “Narco Saints” which she believes promotes negative images of the nation by portraying it as a “narco-state”. The story was previously reported by Reuters.
What happened: The show, based on real events from around two decades ago, tells the story of a man who joins a secret mission to capture a Korean drug lord operating in Suriname.
The Latin American country believes it was portrayed as a ‘drug state’ on the show.
“We will examine the possibility of taking legal action against the producers,” Minister said Albert Ramdin for foreign affairs, international business and international cooperation, said a statement published on the government website on Monday.
The minister acknowledged that the freedom of expression aspect had to be taken into account, but stressed that there were limits. Letters of protest will therefore also be written to the producers of the documentary, the government said in a statement.
negative perception: The minister stressed that Suriname no longer has the image created in the series or participates in such practices. “Whether the practices presented in the documentary are true or false, it’s about creating a negative perception. The whole world sees these things, so it’s not good and we will pay close attention to that,” Minister Ramdin said.
In addition to possible legal action, Ramdin said the government will also file a complaint about the Asian country’s ambassador due to good bilateral relations with South Korea.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment posted on its website.
