Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:

– Independence Day Warning –

The United States warns that Russia plans to step up strikes on civilian infrastructure and government buildings in Ukraine as the nation prepares for its Independence Day.

Wednesday marks the sixth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Russia’s break with the Soviet Union in 1991.

“The State Department has information that Russia is stepping up efforts to launch strikes against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days,” the US Embassy in Kyiv says in a new security alert, urging its citizens to leave Ukraine if possible to leave.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already warned that “in the coming days, Russia may try to do something particularly disgusting, particularly cruel”.

– “No mercy” for murderers, Russia warns –

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov vows “no mercy” for the killers of Daria Dugina, the daughter of an ultra-nationalist intellectual, as hundreds gather for her funeral after she was killed in a car bomb blast over the weekend.

Moscow says Ukrainian intelligence was behind the attack – a claim that Kyiv has denied.

Alexander Dugin – a vocal supporter of the Kremlin’s military campaign who claims to be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin – may have been the intended target of the attack that killed his 29-year-old daughter.

Dugina was killed on Saturday when a bomb exploded in her car as she was driving on a highway outside Moscow.

– West promises long-term support –

European leaders, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have pledged continued support for Ukraine.

Macron promises in a video address at the Crimea Platform conference in Kyiv that EU support for Ukraine will continue “in the long term”.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, who is attending the meeting in person, warns against “appeasement” by Russia, saying “there is no return to normal in relations with Russia.”

Ukraine’s western allies have been supplying Kyiv with military equipment worth billions and imposing increasingly strict sanctions on Russia.

Moscow has accused the western powers of allowing the war to escalate with its support for Ukraine.

– Football season in Ukraine starts –

Ukraine kicks off its new football season despite the ongoing Russian invasion, in an apparent attempt to give the war-ravaged nation a morale boost.

In the first game of the Ukrainian Premier League, Shakhtar Donetsk drew 0-0 against Kharkiv’s Metalist 1925 at the Olympiysky Stadium in Kyiv.

In a pre-match ceremony, the players of both teams and the referees entered the field wrapped in Ukrainian flags and unfurled a banner that read ‘We have the same courage’.

The first symbolic ball kick was performed by a Ukrainian soldier.

For safety reasons, the games will take place without spectators.
