The first ship chartered by the United Nations, to transport grain from Ukraine under a deal to ease a global food crisis, was loaded with 23,000 tons of wheat on Sunday and is ready to depart, Kyiv announced.

The MV Brave Commander will “go to Africa” and “Ethiopia will be the last country where the 23,000-ton shipment of wheat will be delivered,” Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said at the Black Sea port of Pivdennyi in the city of Yuzhne to oversee it ship loading.

“I hope that other ships chartered by the World Food Program (UN) will call at our ports. I hope that there will be two or three more ships soon,” added Kubrakov.

The minister later said on Twitter that the ship was fully loaded and ready to depart, but did not say when it would depart.

The MV Brave Commander docked at the port of Pivdennyi near Odessa on Friday. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure, it goes to Djibouti, from where the grain is then sent to Ethiopia.

It will be the first shipment of food aid since Kyiv and Moscow struck a UN-Turkey-brokered deal last month to unblock grain shipments from the Black Sea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

The agreement lifted a Russian blockade of Ukrainian ports and established safe corridors through naval mines laid by Kyiv.

“We definitely plan for more ships to leave Ukraine’s ports to help people around the world… This should just be the first of many humanitarian ships to leave ports,” said Marianne Ward, WFP Deputy Country Director at the Ukraine journalists.

According to Kyiv, the first merchant ship with grain sailed on August 1, and a total of 16 ships have sailed from Ukraine since the deal in July.

But no UN ship carrying humanitarian food has set sail.

Ukraine and Russia are two of the largest grain exporters in the world.

WFP says a record 345 million people in 82 countries are facing acute food insecurity and up to 50 million people in 45 countries are on the brink of starvation and at risk of being tipped over the brink without humanitarian assistance.
