Scottish Police said on Sunday they were investigating an apparent “online threat” made against Harry Potter author JK Rowling in response to her tweet supporting Salman Rushdie following his stabbing.
“We have received a report of an online threat and officers are investigating,” said a Police Scotland spokeswoman.
The 57-year-old writer tweeted on Friday that she was “feeling very ill at the moment” as news broke of the attack on Rushdie in upstate New York.
In response, one user tweeted, “Don’t worry, you’re next.”
Rowling shared a screenshot of the response and asked the Twitter moderators, “Any chance of support?”
“That’s your policy, right? ‘Violence: You must not threaten violence against any person or group of people,'” she added.
The tweet was apparently removed on Sunday.
The author also tweeted that the police had been informed.
The same Twitter account believed to be based in Pakistan also posted messages praising Rushdie’s attackers.
Hadi Matar, 24, was put on trial in upstate New York on Saturday, with prosecutors detailing how Rushdie was stabbed about 10 times in what they described as a planned, premeditated assault.
Rushdie’s agent Andrew Wylie had said the writer was on a ventilator and was at risk of losing an eye, but in an update on Saturday he told the New York Times that Rushdie had started speaking again, suggesting his may be improved condition.
