(JULIE) hopes that the August 11 calendar date will serve as a natural reminder for residents to call 811 prior to any digging project for a free underground utility tagging. Every few minutes, an underground utility in Illinois gets damaged because someone decides to dig without contacting JULIE first. This is a free call and service.
Damage to a single line can result in injury, repair costs, penalties and inconvenient downtime. Putting up a fence, installing a mailbox post, building a patio or patio, and planting trees and shrubs are all common examples of digging projects that require a call to JULIE first.
“On August 11 and throughout the year, we are reminding homeowners and professional diggers alike to use our complimentary pre-dig service to reduce the risk of encountering an underground utility,” said Kevin Chmura, director of public relations at JULIE. “Notifying JULIE is really the only way to know what utilities are buried in your area so you can dig safely.”
The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as: B. Erosion, previous excavation projects and uneven surfaces. Utilities must be properly marked even when digging just a few inches or digging at a previously marked site, as there is still a risk of encountering an underground utility.
