Two miners were rescued seemingly unharmed in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday after being trapped underground for 10 days and conducting a massive operation backed by Canada to free them.
The miners were finally reached through a newly dug rescue tunnel on Tuesday morning, a full 10 days after they were trapped underground after a rockfall, the Dominican Mining Corporation (CORMIDOM) said in a statement.
The couple, Dominican Gregores Mendez and Colombian Carlos Yepez, have been trapped in the Cerro de Maimon copper and zinc mine about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Santa Domingo since July 31.
More than 110 mining and other experts took part in the rescue effort, and a Canadian military aircraft carrying 26 tons of excavation equipment and other technology arrived on Sunday to help.
In a video circulated Tuesday by the Dominican presidency, Mendez and Yepez are shown lying on stretchers and smiling as they greet President Luis Abinader while medical workers check their vital signs.
Yepez tells the camera that underground conditions are “good,” with adequate ventilation, water, and food.
“We kind of slept comfortably, so that didn’t make our stay that bad,” he said.
Abinader told the men he was “very happy” that they returned safely.
The rescue comes as efforts continue in Mexico to reach 10 workers trapped in a flooded mine nearly a week ago.
