Peruvian President Pedro Castillo appeared before prosecutors investigating corruption allegations against him on Thursday and insisted he was innocent but declined to answer their questions.
Leftist Castillo – a rural schoolteacher who unexpectedly seized power from Peru’s traditional political elite in last year’s elections – faces five criminal investigations into bribery and plagiarism of his university work.
He appeared Thursday on allegations related to irregular promotions in the military.
“I have told the prosecutor that I do not belong to any criminal network, I will prove my innocence,” Castillo told reporters after an hour-long session.
“I haven’t robbed anyone, I haven’t killed anyone, people brought me here and I will always be accountable to people,” he said.
Castillo’s attorney, Benji Espinoza, said his client made an opening statement before the attorney general’s office, but then invoked his constitutional right to remain silent and not answer questions.
Peruvian presidents cannot be tried while in power, but prosecutors say there is nothing to prevent them from being investigated.
Castillo’s mandate ends in July 2026.
