War in Ukraine: Recent Developments

Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:

– Grain ship clears Istanbul controls –

A cargo ship carrying the first shipment of grain from Ukraine since the Russian invasion on February 24 sets sail from Istanbul after receiving clearance from a Russian-Ukrainian team of inspectors to proceed to its final destination in Lebanon.

The Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni left the port of Odessa on Monday after a Turkey-UN brokered deal to lift a Russian naval blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea cities.

Wednesday’s inspection was being watched closely for signs of how well the agreement is holding up.

Ukraine is one of the world’s top grain suppliers and the blockade had caused food prices to skyrocket.

– Ukraine makes new gains in Kherson –

Ukraine says its forces have recaptured seven other villages in the southern Kherson region in a major counteroffensive.

In the first days of its invasion, Moscow captured almost the entire territory of the economically and strategically important region bordering the annexed Crimean Peninsula.

But in recent weeks, the Ukrainian army, supported by supplies of western-supplied long-range artillery, has been regaining ground.

– Germany accuses Russia of gas –

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has accused Russia of blocking the delivery of a turbine needed to keep gas flowing to Europe through the Nord Stream pipeline.

Standing next to the turbine, which is currently stuck at manufacturer Siemens Energy in Germany, Scholz said the unit was “available and working”.

Russian energy giant Gazprom has blamed the unit’s delayed return from Canada, where it was being serviced, for the initial drop in gas supplies through the pipeline in June.

Germany, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas, has branded the decision to limit supplies as a “political” response to Western support for Ukraine.

– Lviv met –

Russia says it destroyed a weapons depot near the city of Lviv using “long-range air-launched high-precision missiles” in a rare attack on western Ukraine.

The Defense Ministry said it also destroyed four warehouses with missiles, artillery pieces and ammunition in the southern Mykolaiv region and eastern Donetsk region.

– USA bans alleged Putin girlfriend –

The United States blacklisted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s alleged girlfriend, Alina Kabaeva, a former Olympic gymnast, and tycoon owner of the second largest estate in London, Andrey Grigoryevich Guryev, in its latest round of sanctions.

It also imposed business bans on several other oligarchs believed to be close to Putin, four officials Russia appointed to manage occupied territories in Ukraine, and around two dozen high-tech institutes and companies, including key state-backed ones electronics company.

– “Volatile” situation in the nuclear power plant –

The situation in Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which came under Russian control in March, is “unsteady,” says the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

The IAEA has attempted to send a mission to the Zaporizhia plant, which, despite being under Russian control, is still run by Ukrainian personnel.

Ukraine has rebuffed efforts that would legitimize Russia’s occupation of the compound in the eyes of the international community.

“Every security principle has been violated in one way or another,” Grossi said at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.
