Rescuers fought on Wednesday to free around nine workers believed to be trapped at a coal mine in northern Mexico, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.
Military personnel and rescue dogs were deployed to the scene of the accident in Coahuila state, Lopez Obrador said.
“In the community of Sabinas, Coahuila, a coal mine collapsed flooding a tunnel and apparently trapping nine miners,” he tweeted.
“We hope to find them safely,” he added.
Anxious relatives gathered at the site awaiting news, some wept and comforted each other.
A woman tearfully said that two of her children worked at the mine, although one of them escaped after the accident.
The Coahuila state government said the miners were digging when they encountered an adjacent area full of water, causing the shaft to collapse and flood.
“The mine started operations in January of this year and to date there have been no reports of any anomalies of any kind,” it said in a statement.
Coahuila, the country’s main coal-producing region, has seen a string of fatal mining accidents over the years.
The worst was an explosion that killed 65 people at the Pasta de Conchos mine in 2006.
Last year, seven miners died after being trapped in another accident in Coahuila.
