Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei visited Ukraine on Monday at the invitation of his counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy to see the damage caused by the Russian invasion, the Central American country’s government said.
The invitation to visit Ukraine came in June during a phone conversation between the two presidents.
In a brief press release, Guatemala’s Presidency Communications Secretariat did not specify when the visit would begin or how long it would last.
After Russia’s first invasion of Ukraine, Giammattei closed the Guatemalan embassy in Moscow.
The Central American country exports nickel to Ukraine while importing iron and steel.
Despite severing diplomatic ties with Russia, Guatemala continues to export coffee and bananas to the Eurasian powerhouse and import fertilizers, medical supplies and paper.
After the June call, Giammattei said Zelensky wanted him to “see first-hand the damage being done in Ukraine and tell the world about it.”
“We were talking about reconstruction in Ukraine, where they need workers, so he asked that Guatemalans travel to Ukraine for work,” Giammattei added in a statement released by the state news agency.
Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24 after months of mounting tensions between the neighbors.
Like many war-affected countries, Guatemala has since pushed up fuel prices.
