China confirms vaccination of top officials to calm vaccine skeptics – Asia Pacific News News – Report by AFR

Chinese anti-Covid vaccines are safe and have been made available to the country’s leaders, Beijing health officials said Saturday, to reassure the populace about their quality amid falling vaccination rates.

With fast-track lockdowns, lengthy quarantines and mass testing, China is the last major economy still pursuing the goal of eliminating outbreaks, even as its zero-Covid strategy is taking a heavy toll on the economy.

But convincing many Chinese to get vaccinated — particularly the elderly — has struggled, with the relatively stable health situation and widespread fears about the quality of Chinese vaccines often blamed.

A year and a half after the country’s vaccination campaign began, the statement by Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, on Saturday marks the first time China has officially commented on its leaders’ vaccination status.

“All current leaders of the Communist Party and the state have been vaccinated against Covid-19, and they have all been vaccinated with Chinese-made vaccines,” Zeng said in comments indicating President Xi Jinping is included in the group.

“This shows that our leaders take the prevention and control of Covid-19 very seriously and have great confidence in Chinese anti-Covid vaccines,” he added.

According to Zeng, among those over 60, only 67.3 percent of those over 60 have received three doses, a rate that drops to 38.4 percent among those over 80.

Authorities are also working to allay fears fueled by misinformation circulating online.

“Covid vaccines do not cause leukemia, diabetes” and “do not cause tumor multiplication,” Wang Fusheng, director of the infectious diseases department at Beijing’s 301 Military Hospital, said on Saturday.

The most commonly used Chinese vaccines are those of the private laboratory Sinovac and those of the state-owned pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm. Beijing has yet to approve the use of foreign Covid vaccines on its soil.

China is currently registering a few hundred new cases every day, with authorities moving quickly to quell outbreaks by imposing localized lockdowns and mandatory quarantine for infected patients.
