Biden tries to mobilize against crime and climate before the midterms

Climate change in Massachusetts on Wednesday, gun control in Pennsylvania on Thursday, next week – law and order in Florida.

US President Joe Biden is back on the road to try to mobilize voters ahead of November’s midterm elections, which are expected to be painful for the Democratic Party.

Biden will travel to the northeastern Pennsylvania town of Wilkes-Barre on Thursday to brush up on his crime-fighting credentials at a time when violence is rising in the United States.

This comes after he attempted to reignite his climate change agenda in the northeastern state of Massachusetts on Wednesday, and ahead of a visit to Florida on Monday — at the invitation of an association of African-American police officers — where he will also attend a campaign meeting with his party.

It remains to be seen whether the frenzy of activity will do much to improve Democrats’ chances of midterm at a time when Biden is more unpopular than ever.

Biden’s approval ratings hit a new low, according to a study by Quinnipiac University in the state of Connecticut, released Wednesday: Only 31 percent of Americans were satisfied with his leadership of the country.

As Republicans accused Biden of being a criminal, the White House released a statement detailing all of the government’s law enforcement initiatives.

These include a gargantuan Infrastructure and Public Services Act passed last fall that allocates resources to local authorities to fight crime, and efforts to reduce gun violence and strengthen gun control.

“President Biden knows what makes our communities safer: investing in community policing and crime prevention,” the White House said ahead of the trip to Pennsylvania on Thursday.

“The President believes we can and must do more to reduce crime and save lives.”

Conservatives have criticized Biden for wanting to cut law enforcement budgets. However, the White House indicated that he was seeking a total of $37 billion to fund police and increase funding for gun crime investigations in fiscal 2023.

Biden’s plan to spend more time locally in the United States comes after a period of intense foreign travel, including a NATO summit in Spain and a controversial trip to Saudi Arabia.
