Senegalese circus troupe teaches children to dream – Health and Lifestyle News – Report by AFR

Suspended in the air by a hoop, Marietou Thiam’s slender figure twists and turns under the spellbound gaze of the spectators of Dakar’s first-ever circus festival.

Thiam is the artistic director – and one of only two female members – of Sencirk, Senegal’s leading circus company, which organized the festival.

The 29-year-old first moved to Dakar for her studies, but left that life behind to join the circus.

Her family never approved of the decision. But when she’s on stage, Thiam doesn’t regret anything.

It is carried by the magic of the moment – and the importance of Sencirk’s mission.

Because the circus company also acts as a place of learning for orphans and children from low-income families.

It offers them the opportunity to learn new skills, find a sense of community – and have fun.

One of the teachers, Malick, says Sencirk changed his life.

The 30-year-old came to Senegal from Guinea in 2015 and lived on the streets until he came across the company.

Now, thanks to his apprenticeship, he can afford to rent an apartment in Ngor, a rural neighborhood in Dakar.

On a clear May afternoon on Ngor Beach, Malick leaps into the air and looks like he’s going to fly head over heels, his feet seeming to touch a bright white sun.

One acrobatic feat leads to the next, and suddenly Malick and his troupe form a human pyramid.

Both an artist and a teacher, he shares his passion with children in need – children who could one day take over Malick and Marietou’s mantle.

Soon it will be their turn to climb the pyramid and reach for the stars.
