War in Ukraine: Recent Developments

#War #Ukraine #Developments

Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:

– ‘Biggest challenge’ –

As G20 ministers prepare to start talks in Indonesia, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says Russia’s war in Ukraine is the “biggest challenge” to the global economy.

Moscow’s invasion has pushed up inflation and threatens widespread hunger and poverty.

“We see negative spillovers from this war in all parts of the world, particularly in terms of higher energy prices and increasing food insecurity,” she says.

– High Stakes Cereal Speaks Eye Business –

Russia and Ukraine are making substantial progress in their first direct talks since March over an agreement to ease a global food crisis caused by blocked grain exports from the Black Sea.

The high-level meeting between UN and Turkey officials in Istanbul lasts just over three hours and concludes with an agreement to meet again in Turkey next week.

– Strike kills at 12, Zelensky criticizes “act of terrorism” –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attacking Russia for carrying out rocket attacks on Vinnytsia in the center of the country that have killed at least 12 people, including a child.

“Every day Russia kills civilians, kills Ukrainian children, launches rocket attacks on civilian installations where there is no military target. What is this if not an open act of terrorism?” he says.

The strike in the central Ukrainian city also sparks a large fire that is being fought by dozens of rescue workers, and emergency services say 90 workers are on the scene.

– Global outlook clouded’ –

Yellen’s comments ahead of the G20 meeting echo earlier comments from the head of the International Monetary Fund, who said the global economic outlook had “deteriorated significantly”.

This was due to the invasion of Moscow and comes just months after the IMF revised downwards its global growth forecast for 2022 and 2023.

The IMF “forecasts another downgrade in global growth” in 2022 and 2023, says the fund’s head, Kristalina Georgieva, in a blog post.

– Allusion to Ukraine on Bastille Day –

The war in Ukraine shapes the traditional Paris Bastille Day military parade, at which France honors its Eastern European NATO allies.

“The parade is informed by and takes into account the strategic context,” says an official in Macron’s office.

“The idea is to highlight strategic solidarity with our allies.”
