Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:
– Ukraine claims to have hit weapons depot –
Ukraine claims to have destroyed a weapons depot as part of a missile and missile attack on Russian military targets in southern Ukraine.
Ukrainian military officials say the strikes in the Kherson region destroyed artillery, armored vehicles “and a storage facility with ammunition in Nova Kakhovka.”
Russian authorities in the city say Ukrainian attacks have damaged civilian infrastructure and killed at least seven people, a number that has not been independently verified.
The Ukrainian army has been waging a counter-offensive for several weeks to recapture Kherson, which was captured by Russian troops when Ukraine was invaded in early February.
– Five Ukrainians rescued in special operation –
In another development in the Kherson region, Ukrainian military intelligence says its troops there rescued five Ukrainians in a special operation.
It states that a military soldier, a former police officer and three civilians have been freed, and that one of those released has “a serious battle wound”.
– US, EU pledge nearly $3 billion –
The US Treasury Department announces that it will provide Ukraine with an additional $1.7 billion in economic aid to fund its recovery from the Russian invasion.
“This aid will help Ukraine’s democratic government provide essential services to the people of Ukraine,” Finance Minister Janet Yellen said in a statement. The funds are part of the $7.5 billion aid package that President Joe Biden signed into law in May.
And European Union finance ministers approve €1 billion ($1 billion) in financial aid to Ukraine, a first installment of a promised €9 billion package for Kyiv agreed in May.
“This will give Ukraine the necessary funds to meet urgent needs and ensure the operation of critical infrastructure,” says Czech Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura, whose country holds the bloc’s rotating chairmanship.
– Turkey hosts grain talks –
Turkey says it will host Russian and Ukrainian delegations along with UN diplomats on Wednesday to discuss resuming blocked grain shipments across the Black Sea.
The meeting with Turkish officials comes as food prices are skyrocketing around the world due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat and other grains.
But its supplies have been blocked by Russian warships and mines that Kyiv has laid across the Black Sea.
– Toll increases after east strike –
The death toll from a Russian missile attack that partially destroyed an apartment building in the town of Khasiv Yar on Sunday rises to 38 as Moscow forces try to tighten their grip on the eastern Donbass region.
Meanwhile, Russian forces are launching “massive” attacks on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, with missiles hitting two medical facilities and residential buildings, the city’s mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych says.
Regional head Vitaliy Kim said 12 people were injured.
– Lego moves out –
The world’s largest toymaker, Denmark’s Lego, says it will cease all its operations in Russia, ending its Moscow workforce and a partnership with a company that operates 81 stores in Russia.
A Lego spokeswoman said the company had decided to “indefinitely suspend commercial operations in Russia given the ongoing extensive disruptions in the operating environment”.
