Russia initiates criminal proceedings against activists Yashin: lawyer

Russian authorities have launched a criminal case against Ilya Yashin, one of the last remaining opposition figures in the country, for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

“I received a call from an investigator – they are starting to search his apartment,” lawyer Vadim Prokhorov said on Facebook.

In June Yashin, a Moscow city councillor, was sentenced to 15 days in prison for disobedience to the police. He was due to be released in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Yashin has been a prominent opposition figure in Russia since the mass protests against President Vladimir Putin in 2011-2012. He denounced the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

He is an ally of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny and was close to Boris Nemtsov, an opposition politician who was assassinated near the Kremlin in 2015.

After Putin deployed troops to Ukraine on February 24, Russia introduced a law imposing prison sentences of up to 15 years for disseminating information about the military that the Russian government deemed false.

Yashin, who turned 39 in prison, wrote on social media early Tuesday that he was due to be released at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.

“Maybe they’ll let me out. Maybe not,” he said. “What do you think?”

The announcement of the criminal investigation into the opposition politician comes amid an unprecedented crackdown on dissenting voices in Russia, with most opposition activists either in prison or out of the country.

Since Putin sent troops to Ukraine, Moscow has stepped up efforts to stamp out dissent.

Yashin said in court in June that his detention was apparently the prelude to criminal proceedings.

He cited the case of his friend and opposition colleague Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was arrested and later prosecuted for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army.

Kara-Murza, 40, is currently in custody.

In April he was sentenced to 15 days in prison for disobeying police orders.

Since the beginning of Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine, independent media have been shut down or shut down, and tens of thousands of Russians have fled the country.

In the run-up to the military campaign in Ukraine, a Russian court has also banned the country’s most prominent human rights group, Memorial, and Navalny’s political organizations have been banned.
