The number of people killed in an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites rose to 11 on Saturday in what is expected to be the latest death toll, police said.
Part of Italy’s largest Alpine glacier gave way last Sunday, sending ice and rock down the mountain in a disaster officials have blamed on climate change.
“We have identified all the victims,” said Colonel Giampietro Lago of the police science department.
“We have reached a toll of 11. To date, we have no indication that we believe more people may be involved,” he said.
However, the search operation continued and more materials were found around the Marmolada glacier on Saturday, said Maurizio Fugatti, president of the northern autonomous province of Trentino.
“The search continues with drones and we will do the same tomorrow,” he said.
Trentino prosecutors have launched an investigation into the cause of the disaster, with some families accusing the authorities of leaving the glacier open despite clearly dangerous climbing conditions.
The avalanche struck a day after a record high of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded at the top of Marmolada.
