A Mexican reporter was shot dead in the violence-torn northeastern state of Tamaulipas on Wednesday, according to the Expreso newspaper, where he works.

Antonio de la Cruz became the 12th journalist to be killed this year in Mexico, which is heading for one of the deadliest years yet for the press.

In his posts on social media, he had repeatedly denounced alleged acts of corruption by politicians.

“In the face of this new act of violence, the Expreso-La Razon publishing group demands justice from the authorities at all levels,” the newspaper said.

De la Cruz’s daughter was injured in the attack in Ciudad Victoria, it said.

Tamaulipas State Assemblyman Gustavo Cardenas, who was close to the journalist, told Milenio television that the woman was shot in the head by De la Cruz.

More than 150 journalists have been murdered since 2000 in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for the media, with only a fraction of the crimes resulting in convictions.

The victims are often reporters working for local media in states torn by drug cartel-related violence.

The United States and the European Parliament have called on Mexico to provide adequate protection for journalists following the recent spate of killings.
