US drugstore chain CVS said Monday that it had temporarily limited purchases of the morning-after pill to three packs per transaction to avoid a shortage following a recent US Supreme Court ruling that violated the constitutional right to abortion was revoked.

In a statement, the company said it has “a large stock” of Plan B and Aftera, two products intended for women to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or when a birth control method fails.

The drugs — commonly known as the “morning after pill” — are different from abortion drugs, which terminate pregnancies.

The move comes after the US Supreme Court on Friday overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision that enshrined a woman’s right to an abortion, saying individual US states can now allow or restrict the procedure themselves .

“To ensure equal access and consistent supply on store shelves, we have implemented a temporary purchase limit of three (boxes) for these products,” the CVS statement said.

Walgreens, another major US drugstore chain, said it has no plans “at this time” to restrict sales of morning-after pills.

“Walgreens is still able to meet in-store demand,” a spokeswoman said. “We are currently working on replenishing the online inventory for ship-to-home.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, supermarket chain Walmart also limited sales of morning-after pills to four or six for orders due for delivery by the end of the month, but not for orders due for shipping in early July.

The company did not immediately respond to a request from AFP.
