Thousands marched in the German city of Munich on Saturday to urge leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations who are due to come to Germany to a summit to do more to fight climate change.
“We only have one planet,” read one poster.
“Save the world, not your own asses,” said another.
The organizers, which include around 15 non-governmental organizations, said around 6,000 people took part in the demonstration in the Bavarian capital.
But police said only about 4,000 people attended.
The leaders of the G7 – the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan – meet at a luxurious chateau in the German Alps on Sunday.
Among the protesters, Illayda, a 21-year-old who did not give her middle name, said they should be more concerned about climate change.
“The G7 countries are responsible for a third of greenhouse gas emissions despite making up only a tenth of the world’s population,” said the young member of the World Wildlife Fund.
Police deployed heavy security forces in central Munich to avoid a repeat of anti-G20 riots in the German city of Hamburg in 2017.
