People who are attracted to others who smell like them – Science-Environment News – Report by AFR

It’s often said that people who click instantly share “chemistry”.

That phrase could be quite true, according to a new study published Friday in the journal Science Advances, which finds people with similar body odors are more likely to think of each other as friends.

“Non-human land mammals are constantly sniffing themselves and each other, and based on that they decide who is friend or foe,” wrote a research group led by Inbal Ravreby of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

Because humans seek out friends who are similar to them, the team hypothesized that humans can smell themselves and others to subconsciously assess body odor similarity and assess their compatibility.

To find out, they set out to collect samples from pairs of same-sex non-romantic friends who described themselves as clicked at first sight, meaning “where a sense of friendship formed before extensive biographical information was exchanged.” . according to paper.

After extensive recruitment efforts, they found 20 couples, half male and half female, all between the ages of 22 and 39.

To prevent their samples from being affected by contamination or external factors, all participants had to follow a strict protocol that included avoiding spicy foods and allowing their partner and pets to sleep in a clean cotton t-shirt provided to them was provided included.

The T-shirts were collected in ziplock bags and tested with an electronic nose – a device equipped with sensors to analyze chemical composition. The researchers found that the olfactory signatures of “click-friends” were statistically more closely matched than odors between non-friends.

To assess whether the eNose results accurately reflect human perception, the team recruited human smellers and developed a series of tests to check the validity of their result.

For example, in one of these tests, human sniffers were presented with three smells: two from a pair of clickfriends and one outlier. They successfully identified the pairs and discarded the outlier.

These results seemed to support the hypothesis that similar smells might spur friendships, but an alternative explanation was that people who are friends spend a lot of time together and therefore have similar body odor-forming experiences, e.g. B. where they live and what they eat.

To unravel these two possibilities, the team developed another test to see if smells could be a successful predictor of whether two people who have never met will click further.

They recruited 17 strangers and had them all interact with each other in a test called a “mirror game” – placed half a meter apart so they could subconsciously smell each other, they were asked to mimic each other’s hand movements for two minutes without speaking to each other.

Chemical similarity in their smells, as tested by the eNose, successfully predicted mutual clicks 77 percent of the time, and predicted 68 percent of the times where both sides reported they hadn’t clicked.

The closer the scent was to people, the more they reported liking each other, understanding each other, and feeling greater chemistry between them.

Taken together, “the results of the study converged to suggest that human same-sex nonromantic clickfriends smell more similar than randomly expected,” the team concluded.

Humans use complex language to interact, unlike other land mammals, and so it’s possible that the effects of smells in laboratory settings were magnified compared to their importance in real life, the team wrote.

“Nonetheless, we believe our results indicate that we may also be more similar to other land mammals in this regard than we normally assume.”
