Two people were killed and 14 others injured, several seriously, in shootings near bars in central Oslo, Norwegian police said on Saturday.

Police said a suspect was arrested after the shootings, which took place around 1:00 am (Friday 23:00 GMT) at three locations, including a gay bar, close to each other in the center of the Norwegian capital.

Police reported two dead and 14 wounded and said two guns had been confiscated.

“Now everything indicates that there was only one person who committed this act,” Police Officer Tore Barstad said at a news conference.

However, police numbers in the capital have been reinforced to deal with other incidents, he added, without specifying whether it was an act of terrorism.

Police received the first reports at 1:14 a.m. and the suspect was arrested five minutes later, he said.

The shootings took place near the London Pub gay club, Mr Nilsen jazz club and a diner.

Police officers gathered to discuss the impact of the shooting on the staging of Oslo’s Pride march, which is due to take place on Saturday afternoon.

Heavily armed police officers, equipped with bulletproof vests and helmets, patrolled the scene.

“He looked very determined where he was aiming. When I realized it was serious, I ran. There was a bleeding man on the ground,” a woman who witnessed the incident told the Verdens Gang newspaper.

Another witness cited by the newspaper mentioned the use of an automatic weapon – which the police did not confirm – and described it as a “war zone”.

“There were a lot of casualties on the ground who had head injuries,” he said.

According to an NRK radio journalist present at the time of the shooting, the gunman came with a bag from which he pulled a gun and began shooting.

Of the 14 injured, eight were taken to hospital and six others were treated by paramedics.

“Some are described as having serious injuries, others as having minor injuries,” Barstad said.

Generally peaceful Norway was the scene of bloody attacks on July 22, 2011, when right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people.

He first detonated a bomb near the seat of government in Oslo, killing eight people.

He then disguised himself as a police officer and went on a shootout at a summer camp for left-wing youth on the island of Utoya, killing another 69 people, most of them teenagers.
