It is very difficult for girls to step forward and set an example for other girls in a patriarchal society. In Pakistan, many women have set an example for the rest of the females who want to become part of the country’s progress. Hafsa Munawar is a new star in the gender-biased society working efficiently to support Google’s efforts to connect the developer community in Pakistan to the rest of the world. She desires to empower the local women in technology to decrease the gender gap. She has been a part of tech giant Google’s Women Techmakers (WTM) program that allocates resources and provides women’s opportunities in technology. The WTM program succeeded in creating a women’s community in Pakistan in the technology sector.
She is the Google WTM program ambassador and has trained over 1,300 participants in six different cities across Pakistan with teamwork. She is one of the two WTM selected ambassadors from Pakistan. “I was very fortunate and lucky to get early access to a computer and internet and spent hours exploring the hardware and software side of a PC, breaking down the pieces and putting it back together like a jigsaw puzzle,” she said. She wanted to alter the mindset and concepts regarding women in society by uplifting them.
Hafsa and her team provide technical and non-technical education supporting women in society. Technical training includes content on Google Developer technologies such as Android, Google Cloud, Firebase, Web technologies, and other areas such as user experience design. The google program has linkages with academia, industry, and mentors for proper orientation of females. Mentorship is very important for directing women to achieve their goals. Social pressure on women segments inhibited them from pursuing their ambitions.

“I strongly believe that women need to open this discussion space for men not only for inclusivity but also to inform the other side on the issues and problems women face in the industry today,” she said, adding that at WTM, they ensure to conduct dedicated events inviting both males and females to amplify the noise of what they are doing, make discussions more inclusive and to expand the support circle and people rooting in the audience. The google program builds soft skills and improves capacity building among women to counter social problems. Male role models also affect the female journey in technology as they positively impact their activities.
Gender Inequality Index highlighted the gender gap in Pakistan, ranked at 151th out of 156 countries. Pakistan is performing poorly in the sustainable development of females providing fewer opportunities for them. Hafsa Munawar expressed the importance of males for females in a patriarchal society. She praised her father for support in every matter. Male support for females has played a key role in her performance, helping remove the social pressure. Pakistan should create space for women in the industry, commerce, education, and other key sectors by providing a safe working environment.
