In February 2012, Samsung SDI and Lucid entered into a supply agreement. However, the agreement was for the 21700-type of battery. This is the current type of battery Samsung produces. The company is expected to be able compete with Panasonic due to its successful development and mass production batteries like the 4080. This battery will then be used in Tesla’s electric cars.
Tesla previously stated that the 4680 battery offers a fivefold increase of energy density, 16% longer battery life and six times more power than current batteries. The commercial availability of the 4680 batteries has been delayed to 2023.
Samsung IDI has begun trial production of the cylindrical 4080-type battery. It has a diameter 40 mm and an 80 mm height. Samsung intends to place orders for the supply of the batteries from the largest players on the market, such as Tesla or Lucid Electric.
