Noor Mukadam, 27, died on July 20 after being allegedly tortured and killed by Zahir Jaffer, the 30-year-old son of an influential family and dual citizen of Pakistan and the United States.
Mukadam has been pictured by her friends and family with fairy lights, posing for pictures and showing off her dancing skills.
Hours later, the police called her father to tell him that Noor Mukadam had been killed, and he should report to the police station.
Mukadam’s death has brought attention to the plight of women and girls in Pakistan, where violence against them is considered a “serious problem,” according to a 2020 report from Human Rights Watch.
In Pakistan, 28% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, according to the country’s Demographic and Health Survey from 2017-2018. Most domestic violence occurs within marriage and goes unreported because it is considered a cultural standard in Pakistan’s patriarchal society, according to a World Health Organization review of literature on domestic violence in Pakistan from 2008 to 2018.
As a result of its delay, the proposed national bill has become a lightning rod for feminists who argue it is a classic example of how laws regarding violence against women are handled in the country.
Sara Mukadam, Noor Mukadam’s older sister, said her younger sibling was a “Beautiful person” who wanted to make the world a better place.
