Google has announced that its MUM algorithm will be integrated with some searches on Google Search. Google’s search results page is currently undergoing changes that will lead to new ways to discover topics for certain searches.
This new way of searching will expand on the old way of searching and will introduce a more intuitive way to explore for answers. Google will in the coming few months, guide users towards topic paths in a redesigned search experience for some searches that will be more visible as compared to the past.
The Google MUM Algorithm
Google introduced a new search algorithm named MUM that can search across multiple languages and with images to find answers to complex questions. MUM stands for Multitask Unified Model. The feature that Google is testing most with this new algorithm is the ability to search with images instead of just text.
Google has also announced that they will integrate MUM into their LENS app in the coming months.
How MUM will change the search
The MUM algorithm will soon be introduced to Google Search and it will bring dramatic changes to the way search is conducted. It’s possible that MUM will revolutionize the whole idea of what search means. Users currently search for answers, but the new way of searching enabled by MUM will help users explore more complex tasks while also introducing an entirely different way of presenting answers, particularly with images.
The stated goal for these changes is to make search more intuitive. Google characterized these changes as a redesign of Google search and this is exactly what it is. This newer version of search takes three big steps away from the old search that revolved around 10 blue links on the search results page.

What are Google’s Things to Know?
The “things to know” feature of Google Search incorporates Google MUM, to understand all the ways in which users explore a topic. Google uses the example of the keyword phrase “acrylic painting” and notes that there are more than 350 topics associated with this particular keyword phrase.
The things to know feature will identify the most relevant or popular “paths” that users take in exploring that topic and show more website content that relates to these paths. So, instead of waiting for users to conduct follow-up searches, Google search will anticipate those searches and will display the relevant content.
Topic Exploration in Google Search
The second new feature of MUM is referred to as Topic Zoom. This feature allows a searcher to jump in and out of related topics. A searcher can also broaden the topic or zoom into a more granular sub-topic.
The third new feature of MUM is known as Visual Exploration. It’s available now in Google Search, although it may not be available for all searches. It is restricted to searches where the user’s intent is to find inspiration.
