What you need to know about Air Purifiers for Asthma

Air purifiers can help reduce indoor asthma triggers

New York, NY, United States, 10/08/2021 / Top Wire News /

Air purifiers filter particulate matter in the air and can remove dust and smoke from the air indoors and circulate clean air back into the room. People with asthma may find these devices quite helpful as they can help reduce indoor asthma triggers.

An air purifier is a device that people often use in the home to remove indoor pollutants or allergens. There is some research that indicates that air purifiers may benefit people with asthma, reducing or eliminating the trigger source may be the most effective strategy. This article will explore how effective air purifiers are for those suffering from asthma, what one should look for in an air purifier, and discuss other steps to improve indoor air quality.

Keith Woolard, Regional Product Manager for Camfil, shared his observations and the need for high-quality air purification for schools.

An air purifier is simply a device that helps remove pollutants and allergens from indoor air. The device usually contains a filter and a fan. The filter catches the particles as air passes through it and the fan circulates back clean air into the room.

It’s important to know that air purifiers work only on certain solid and liquid particles contained in the air and are ineffective on gases such as radon or on volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are chemicals released by several household products such as paints and cleaning solvents into the air.

Can an air purifier help with Asthma?

Pollutants, allergens, dust or smoke can all trigger asthma symptoms. Air purifiers may help reduce some of these triggers. A 2018 literature review looked at how strategies to reduce indoor allergens affected those with asthma. The researchers who conducted this review found that single strategies such as using an air purifier alone generally did not improve asthma measures. The authors concluded that a combination of methods may improve asthma outcomes but highlighted that further research among larger populations may be needed.

Another 2018 study looked at the effects of air purifiers on 50 people with asthma. Participants in this study were divided into two groups with a randomized group using air purifiers in their bedrooms, while a control group didn’t use any air purifiers. Results of this study indicated significant improvements in both air quality and respiratory function in the group that used air purifiers. This study also called for further research into the use of air purifiers and the corresponding impact of such usage on those with asthma.

According to a 2016 review, portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers reduce the number of particles in the air by 25-50% and reduce asthma symptoms and attacks. However, the research suggests that HEPA filters do not reduce the gas pollutants in tobacco smoke, such as nicotine in the air.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America suggests that air purifiers might help people with asthma, although removing as many sources of environmental triggers as possible is the most effective way to reduce asthma symptoms.
