Electricity Outages in China  A Dark time for Chinese Economy

Industries have been closed down to prevent surpassing Beijing’s energy consumption limitations established to encourage efficiency.

Beijing, China, 10/06/2021 / Beijing News Desk /

Consumers all around the world may suffer shortfalls of cellphones and other items this holiday season as a result of electricity cutbacks to fulfil government energy consumption targets, which prompted Chinese companies to close and leaving some families in the dark.

According to official broadcaster CCTV, 23 workers were diagnosed with gas poisoning in the northeastern city of Liaoyang when aeration at a metal casting plant was cut down due to a power failure. There were no recorded casualties.

Factories were temporarily suspended to prevent surpassing Beijing’s energy-use limitations established to encourage efficiency. According to economists and an environmental organisation, factories depleted this year’s allotment quicker than expected as export demand recovered following the coronavirus epidemic.

According to a component supplier for Apple Inc.’s iPhones, manufacturing at a plant west of Shanghai has been halted following the instructions from local authorities.

The interruption to China’s massive industrial sector during one of their busiest phases highlights the governing Communist Party’s battle to combine economic expansion with attempts to reduce pollution and CO2 emissions.

Beijing’s extraordinary eagerness in implementing electricity consumption limitations may provide long-term advantages, but the brief economic consequences are significant, according to Nomura economists Ting Lu, Lisheng Wang, and Jing Wang in a paper released on Monday.

They predicted that the fallout would be so substantial that they reduced their economic growth projection for China in the current quarter to 4.7% from 5.1% a year ago. They reduced their yearly growth forecast to 7.7% from 8.2%.

Manufacturers are already dealing with processor chip shortfalls, shipping difficulties, and other lasting impacts of the worldwide travel and trade ban to tackle the coronavirus epidemic.

Residents in China’s northeast, where autumn temperatures are dropping, have reported power outages and have urged the authorities to replenish supplies on social media.

The crisis hits as international leaders gather to attend a United Nations environmental summit via video conference on October 12-13 in Kunming, China’s southern metropolis. This puts more pressure on President Xi Jinping’s administration, which is hosting the summit, to demonstrate that it is adhering to emissions and energy efficiency objectives.

China is a major producer of climate-changing industrial gases and uses more energy per unit of economic production than industrialized nations.

The governing party is also planning for the Winter Olympics, which will be held in the Chinese capital of Beijing and the adjacent city of Shijiazhuang in February, a time when bright blue skies are required.

Hundreds of businesses have stated that power restrictions may cause them to postpone processing orders and may cost them money.

Eson Precision Engineering Co. Ltd., an Apple component supplier, announced on Sunday that it will suspend operations at its facility in Kunshan, west of Shanghai, until Thursday in accordance with the local government’s power limitation regulation.

According to Eson, the stoppage will not have a substantial impact on its operations.
