As per the official sources, TikTok has surpassed the mark of one billion monthly users for the first time. This does not come as a surprise as the coronavirus pandemic was responsible for an immense growth spurt in the first half of 2020. Although the app has become among the most popular apps worldwide, it’s still more successful in its home market.
As the chart below shows, China is by far the country where most people use TikTok on a regular basis. 72 percent of the respondents to the Statista Global Consumer Survey conducted in 56 countries said that they used Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok at least once in the last 12 months. The high usage rate in the People’s Republic of China might be one of the reasons behind China’s crackdown on internet usage and online game consumption by minors. In a recent announcement, the country banned live streaming for any resident under the age of 16.
Brazil and Mexico lag considerably behind at the second and third spots with 40 and 37 percent of the respondents claiming that they opened the app at least once in the last 12 months. While the UK and the US share 7th place with 24 percent of respondents in both the countries saying that they opened the app at least once in the last 12 months. TikTok and Douyin were downloaded more than 616 million times in the first and second quarters of 2020 alone.
Overall the social media app has generated more than 2 billion first-time downloads across both the App Store and Google Play Store.
