Australia Lagging Behind Emerging Digital Technology

The Australian Academy of Science has urged the Government of Australia to make developing digital technologies a national priority in science and innovation.

Melbourne, Australia, 09/22/2021 / Melbourne News Bureau /

The digital technology is now the core of our everyday life, as everyone who has moved from their office to a screen for video conference meetings knows.

Even in an after-COVID future, this pattern will persist. Australia is at an intersection with the growth of a robust digital economy to tackle this changing world.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it,” says computing pioneer Alan Kay.

Australia must also use the chance of building its research and innovation skills in new digital technologies to build a digital ecosystem by broadening growth prospects in this key industry and building sovereign strength.

But in building this digital future, Australia stands behind many other countries.

In an opening statement, the Australian Academy of Science has called on the federal government to prioritize new digital technologies.

“Australia risks falling behind as a technologically-driven nation unless we recognize emerging digital technologies as a central, independent sector in its own right, warranting investment in the core aspects of research, innovation, and workforce development,” the organization wrote.

The report presents a number of significant suggestions:

  1. Increase developing digital technologies as a national priority for research and innovation.
  2. The Research Infrastructure Roadmap 2021 should include research and innovation in new digital technologies.
  3. Recognize developing digital technology as growing industry independence.

Which Technologies must be Promoted?

The report focuses on innovative digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of things (IoT), augmented and virtual reality, blockchain, and 5G networks.

These technologies are beginning to change industries, including production, agriculture, recycling, transportation, finance, education, and healthcare. But, unlike established technologies such as 3D printing and mobile computing, or GPS, they are classified as “emerging technologies” since they still have not achieved their full economic viability.

The next wave of developing digital technologies, including self-driving automobiles, smart microgrids, 6G networks, and quantum computing, is going to significantly disrupt and change numerous industries.

Obviously, what inventions will emerge in the future is difficult to foresee accurately. But Australia can guarantee that it stays ahead of the curve regardless of what the future holds, by

establishing a national focus on basic research and engineering in this rapidly changing field.

What Other Countries Are Doing

The issue is that Australia has been doing the opposite. It falls behind countries such as the USA, Britain, France, Canada, and China, all focusing on digital technology as a method to enhance their international competitiveness.

In the case of Australia’s GDP, digital innovation accounted for just 7.4%, compared to the OECD average of 11.2%.
