Drug development is sped up with artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is used by humans to speed up drug development

Fibrosis is essential for your body. Zhavoronkov claims that fibrosis is essential for wound healing and scarring.

“Data Dilemmas

Without enough data to search through and learn from, the possibilities are limited.

Sometimes, scientists can’t get the data they want because it’s not public. Plus, biological data is often “standardized,” says Andreas Bender, PhD, of the Centre for Molecular Science Informatics at England’s University of Cambridge. That is, it’s not diverse enough.

There can be misses, too. Especially with complex diseases, MIT’s Barzilay says, “we don’t understand the biology of the disease enough to collect the right data.” In these cases, there isn’t just one lock that needs a key, but a nest of them. Scientists in this area often know more chemistry than biology, Bender points out. Ultimately, he says, it’s important to distinguish between using AI to create a compound — and actually discovering a treatment that people can take.”

IPF is more common later in life, but it’s not a common part of aging.

Insilico’s new drug was developed by its team in just 18 months.

It first used AI to analyze IPF and then found a new target. It then ran algorithms to search for new drugs, and tested them in a laboratory.

It took several rounds of experiments and the algorithm learned from each one.

The end result? A new drug that could be available for clinical trials in the early 2022.

It may go on the market in four years, if all goes according to plan.

Insilico has not yet published its IPF findings to a scientific journal.

Many drugs that look promising in the lab and sometimes in mice fail to work in humans.

Zhavoronkov describes AI as a Ferrari. “You go very quickly from 0 to 100.” Then you can move at the speed of traffic.

Even though AI can’t solve every drug problem, it can make the process easier.
