Lahore, Pakistan, United States, 09/03/2021 / News Bureau /
The IT Ministry has launched Pakistan’s first countrywide cybersecurity hackathon in association with Ignite, a national technology fund. The aim is to boost cybersecurity awareness, protection, and incident response abilities by performing cyber practices at the national level. University students, freelancers, professionals, and hackers from throughout the country are expected to take part in the competition. More than 1200 persons have signed up for the challenge so far. The competition has been divided into 5 categories in which multiple teams will be competing. The categories included in the Hackathon 2021 are:
- Application Exploitation
- Mobile Device Exploitation
- Network Attacks and Exploitation
- Operating Systems Exploitation
- Speed Programming
The cyber challenge has been prepared in a way to serve a two-way purpose; to offer a platform for collaboration, information exchange, and debates on current cybersecurity concerns, as well as to offer national cybersecurity resources with hands-on expertise. Participation is expected from university students, freelancers, professionals, and hackers from all over the country. Once the registration has ended, the Hackathon will begin in October 2021.
TechJuice.pk, in an article about Digital Pakistan Cybersecurity Hackathon 2021, stated:
“The organizations responsible for ensuring cybersecurity compliance in Pakistan are the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), and the State Bank of Pakistan. These organizations are partners for this national competition. This challenge will provide awareness and resource pool to these organizations to better safeguard the cyber front of Pakistan.”
The first round of the competition will be between the 3 big cities; Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. 150 participants will be selected from each city. A team of up to 3 participants is recommended. The onsite exercises would take place on separate days in the three cities (Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad). The first round of the competition will be a 2-day event, with 10-12 hours of activity each day. Once the first round has been completed, 150 participants (50 teams) will be promoted to the final round. Like the first round, the final will also be a 10-12 hour session. Real-time scores will be displayed on a web-based panel. The initial rounds will be held at Ignite’s National Incubation Centers or related universities. A grand total of 6 Million PKR will be awarded to the top 3 teams in each of the 5 categories of the Hackathon.
“Ignite is excited about hosting Pakistan’s first nationwide cybersecurity hackathon in collaboration with IT Ministry, PTA, SBP, NEPRA, and other partners,” said Asim Shahryar Husain, CEO Ignite. “There is a shortage of 3-4 million cybersecurity professionals globally. Our goal is to identify and reward cybersecurity talent in Pakistan.”
