According to a Counterpoint Research survey released on Thursday, Xiaomi topped Samsung and Apple to become the world’s number one smartphone brand for the first time in June.
Xiaomi was also the second most popular brand globally in terms of sales in Q2 2021, having sold about 800 million smartphones since its debut in 2011.
“Since Huawei’s downturn began, Xiaomi has been making persistent and active attempts to fill the gap caused by this decline,” said Research Director Tarun Pathak. “The OEM has been expanding in Huawei’s and HONOR’s legacy regions like China, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.”
Xiaomi’s sales increased by 26% month over month in June, making it the month’s fastest-growing brand.
According to statistics provided by an analyst firm, Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung as Europe’s top smartphone seller. In the second quarter of 2021, the Chinese company is said to have eclipsed Samsung in terms of smartphone shipments to become the global leader. According to Strategy Analytics, smartphone shipments in Europe increased 14% year over year to 50.1 million units in the third quarter. After Xiaomi and Samsung, Apple, Oppo, and Realme appear in the top-five vendors’ list, in that order.
The seller witnessed considerable demand in nations such as Russia, Ukraine, Spain, and Italy, according to the corporation.
Xiaomi has continued to rise in worldwide smartphone shipments, in addition to the European market. According to a recent study from IDC, the Beijing-based company surpassed Apple and placed second in global smartphone shipments in the second quarter.
Unlike Xiaomi, Samsung’s shipments fell 7% year over year to 12 million units in the second quarter, according to Strategy Analytics. The South Korean behemoth, on the other hand, maintained its dominance on the continent, with a 24 percent market share.
“Samsung is doing well with new 5G models from the Galaxy A series,” Strategy Analytics stated, “but it is facing rising competition from Apple in the high-end and Chinese vendors in the low-end, and it has yet to fully capitalize on Huawei’s downfall in Europe.”
In terms of smartphone shipments, Apple came in the third position after Samsung. In Europe, the iPhone maker saw a 15.7 percent year-over-year gain in the second quarter. With 9.6 million iPhones set to be shipped, the corporation has a 19.2 percent market share. The iPhone 12 series is reported to have grabbed the interest of Apple fans in the region who were looking for a replacement for their older Apple devices.
In the top five, only Oppo and Realme remained. While Oppo saw a year-over-year increase of 180 percent, Realme saw a 1,800 percent increase. In Europe, however, no company was able to reach a double-digit market share.
According to Strategy Analytics, Oppo has a 5.6 percent market share with 2.8 million smartphone shipments, while Realme has a 3.8 percent market share with 1.9 million handsets shipped.
In Europe, smartphone shipments fell from 59.1 million in the first quarter to 50.1 million in the second. The drop in shipments also reduced year-on-year growth from 24% to 14%, resulting in a minus 15% quarter-on-quarter increase.
