Garland Roof Repair Company – Roof Insurance Claim Denied: What Should You Do?

Garland homeowners need to know the steps to take when their roof insurance claim is denied. Garland Roof Repair and replacement company.

Garland, TX , 05/04/2021 / Garland Roof Repair Company /

According to a fact sheet by the Insurance Information Institute, around 38.2% of claims made in the year 2017 by homeowners were for wind and hail damage, putting such losses at the top when it comes to roof insurance.

On average, a homeowner makes between 2 and 6 claims per year. How many of these are denied? It’s difficult to say, but the number is no doubt high.

The reason?

Plenty!

Just like you, insurance agencies also want to limit the risks coming their way. This is why they offer specific coverage when it comes to your roof. With an increase in roof claims, this coverage has been given its own name: Wind/Hail Coverage.

First, let’s talk about which homeowners insurance policies cover roof damage:

HO-1

This insurance policy provides limited coverage. It includes the following 11 specific perils:

  • Fire and lightning

  • Windstorms and hail

  • Civil commotion and riots

  • Explosions

  • Mischief

  • Aircraft

  • Vehicles

  • Smoke

  • Malicious mischief and vandalism

  • Volcanic eruptions

  • Theft

HO-2

Along with the above 11 perils, HO-2 also cover the following additional perils:

  • Falling object causes severe damage

  • Plumbing problems that cause water damage

  • HVAC system damages (mold and mildew)

  • Household appliances damage (fire)

HO-3

An HO-3 policy covers all above perils and the following:

  • Freezing pipes

  • Snow

  • Damage caused by electrical currents

  • Problems with the HVAC system

  • Damage to the fire sprinkler system

Additionally, your personal belongings are also covered under this policy.

Why Your Claim is Denied

Before attempting to refile the claim, it’s essential to understand why your claim was denied. Following are the five common reasons:

1. Deductible

The deductible is the amount of money that you must contribute before the insurance company will pay for any damages. If the cost of the damage is less than your policy’s deductible, the insurance agency must deny your claim.

    2. Lack of maintenance

If your roof is old and already had leaks or damages before the wind storm, your claim will be denied on the basis of lack of maintenance.

      3. Exclusions

Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover all perils. It’s possible that you might have to buy roof insurance separately. If you live in an area that has regular wind storms, roof coverage may be excluded from your policy. Liability is Elsewhere

If your roof was damaged by construction work that you were doing or having done by professionals, then the insurance agency will not cover the costs.

        4. Cosmetic Damage

If the damage to the roof is purely cosmetic and no structural or functional harm has been done as in cracked shingles but no leaks, then the insurance agency will deny the claim.

5 Steps to Refile Your Insurance Claim

Step #1: Read the Terms and Conditions Again

Did you miss reading a clause in your policy that denies your claim? Before blaming your insurance agent, we suggest you have a look through the policy one more time. Check your policy to see if your circumstances fall under any exclusions set by your provider, and focus on the damages that trigger the policy. Once you have made sure that your claim is eligible under the terms of your policy, you can proceed with your new application.

          Step #2: Pay Missed Payments

Did you miss any payments? Perhaps the reminder got lost in the mail, or a check bounced, and your last payment is still due. An insurance agent is more likely to approve your claim if the premiums are paid in full.

Step #3: Look for an Independent Roofer

Get the roof inspected by a roofer independent of your insurance agency. Inform him that you are doing this for your insurance claim because they will their very best in the hopes that they will get the contract. Once you have the evaluation in your hand, send it to your insurance agent

Step #4: Let Them Represent Your Case

An independent contractor will give it straight to your insurance agent, which will make your claim stronger. Every detail will be highlighted with clarity so that the insurance adjuster knows the extent of the damage. This way, the evaluation will be fair and completely accurate.

Step #5: Finalize the Contractor Payment and Time of Repairs

It’s possible that the insurance agent might allow you to keep your contractor. However, in most cases, the insurance agency appoints its own contractor. The reevaluation will definitely put some weight behind the claim. After the claim is approved, you can discuss the payment terms with your insurance agent. You will receive the first check for the repairs and once they are complete, you will receive the second check for the contractor’s payment.

Now that you know the reasons why your insurance claim might be denied, you can take the necessary steps required to reapply for the claim. Just make sure that the independent contractor you are choosing is a well-respected one and has a good reputation around your neighborhood.
