The Census of 2010 – 2020 shows the second slowest population growth in the last 100 Years of United States history.
“The results of the census determine the number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives and how many votes each state gets in the Electoral College”[1]
As per the findings, Texas will gain the newest seats in the U.S. House of Representatives under new census numbers released recently, while states in the Northeast and Midwest will lose seven seats, shifting some political clout to Republican stronghold before 2022 midterms.
Is Texas Becoming more Democratic?
There is one bright spot for Democrats, as demographic changes mean that Republican strongholds such as Texas are becoming more Democratic, putting the party closer to its long-term goal of someday moving the lone star state out of the Republican column.
As states in the industrial north lose population, they’re also projected to lose congressional seats to Western and Sun Belt states. The two big states, in terms of actual size both, are bigger than each other; even they both have a higher population than any other state in the United States.
State That Lost Most of Its Residents
California has the highest population and has around 10 million more people than Texas. Still, Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in the country. Both states have the highest economies. Both heavily influence the rest of the country. While many Texans have moved to California in recent years, more Californians have moved to Texas than any other state.
$1.5 Trillion per Year for Gov. Programs
But census results also affect the amount of federal funding a state gets. The U.S. government apportions about $1.5 trillion per year to states for programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Education, and public services, NPR reports.
Apportions Are Four Months Behind the Schedule
The release of the top-level apportionment data was four months behind schedule, as the coronavirus pandemic hit just when the census Bureau was launching the constitutionally required national headcount.
The delayed start could create added chaos at the filing deadlines for next year’s congressional elections, as incumbents and their challenges won’t know which districts they’re running for until their campaigns have already started.
California, while still the most populous state, will lose a congressional seat for the first time since it joined the union in 1850.
