Halmahera Resources Supports a New Program to Develop Low-Carbon Production of Nickel

Halmahera Resources welcomes strategic opportunities of development to embrace a new paradigm for mines

Halmahera Resources, a leading low-cost producer of nickel that generates sustainable prosperity for our employees, investors and the communities in which it operates, is pleased to announce individual research and development of a new processing facility aiming at producing low-carbon nickel through the use of actual technologies. The company supports peculiarities of low-carbon nickel production due to its increased promotion in recognized areas that are highly related to low or even zero-carbon production of nickel.

“The EV industry altogether with other consumer sectors need low-carbon metal in the near future, this being stated by major resource companies. Because of significant advantages listed by regions having a determined convergence with low-carbon hydroelectricity and nickel-cobalt sulphide projects, Halmahera Resources stands the chance to develop low-carbon products solicitated by costumers of the mining sector. As nickel is highly used to advance the clean energy revolution, we are adepts of the low-carbon production to benefit our consumers, our investors and the environment in general”, said Sajmsul Salim, Senior Vice President for environmental protection.

Major influence in the case of low-carbon nickel production is coming from the part of host rocks that are composed out of more than 85% of the mass of the resource at nickel-cobalt sulphide projects. Deep research has been provided concluding with the fact that host rocks naturally assimilate carbon dioxide when are vulnerable under the air through the process of mineral carbonation that occurs spontaneously. Despite various challenges the nickel industry goes through, related to the actual processing approach of sulphide ores, there is valid feedback requiring low-cobalt nickel production in the upcoming period. It is considered that extensive modeling of renewable energy installations at mine sites will help mining operations achieve higher level of renewable electricity when improving the market solidity.
