However, there is always room for improvement. You can get more out of your coworking space by using it effectively. Here are five tips and strategies for making the most of your coworking space.
Every kind of work environment has its distractions. When you work in an office, there is office chatter and co-workers who interrupt your workflow. If you work from home, the lure of dirty dishes or a pile of laundry can pull you away from a task.
Coworking can eliminate some of these distractions, but it can also come with its share of focus busters. For example, you might end up socializing in common areas or letting a conference call or meeting drag on for too long.
This is where keeping yourself accountable can help. Many people find that making a list of daily tasks and then crossing them off as they accomplish them can help them maintain their focus.
If you use this method, make sure your tasks are achievable. In other words, don’t give yourself unattainable goals, as this can lead to frustration and burnout. If you’re working on a big project, break it down into smaller sections so you can tackle one or two each day.
2. Make Time for Breaks
When you use a coworking space, you might be tempted to use every available second of your time. However, pushing yourself too hard can backfire.
In one study, researchers found that most people do their best work in stretches of around 52 minutes. After this period of time, productivity tends to fall off. The research also found that the optimal duration for breaks is about 17 minutes.
This gives your brain time to rest and recharge. There is also a psychological component to giving yourself something to look forward to. When you know you’re going to get a nice break after 52 minutes, you can buckle down and focus because you know your sprint is just that — a relatively quick burst of productivity followed by a well-deserved break.
To keep track of your work sprints, you can use a timer. Some people take advantage of the timer feature on their smartphone to keep track of their productivity periods and breaks.
3. Plan Your Day in Advance
Before you head into work, it helps to plan out your workday. Write down a list of tasks or goals you need to achieve in that specific work session and give yourself enough time to complete them.
Doing this can help you stay more focused. Instead of thinking about everything you need to do all at once, you only need to concern yourself with one item on the list at a time. If you don’t finish the item within the allotted time frame, it’s perfectly okay to move it to the next workday.
As you set schedules for yourself, you will learn how long it takes to accomplish specific tasks. You can make adjustments to give yourself the time you need to take care of items on your list.
4. Fight Back Against Procrastination
Just about everyone procrastinates. This is true whether you work for a business or run your own company. Unfortunately, things like email and social media make it possible to procrastinate just about anywhere.
You can fight back against the urge to procrastinate. Some strategies for doing this include giving yourself deadlines, sectioning longer tasks into shorter mini-tasks that are easier to accomplish, and giving yourself breaks when you need them.
5. Lean on Technology
The days of working on a typewriter and storing documents in a filing cabinet are long gone. Today’s workforce operates faster and more smoothly thanks to the technology that makes it easy to run a business from anywhere.
There are numerous apps and tools designed to make a remote workstyle more productive. Look for apps and tools that help you run your business more efficiently.
For example, Dropbox is a cloud storage service that lets you access computer files on the go. Slack lets you chat with team members in real-time, so you can stay connected and collaborate even when you’re working from different locations.
