Why Winter is the BEST Time for a Trip to East Africa

Depending on your desired adventure, the best time to visit Africa changes, but those looking for a sunny, warm time, winter is hands down the best choice.

For many people, a trip to Africa is on their bucket list. Whether the allure of the animals of the Serengeti, the crystal blue waters and white sand of a Zanzibar beach, or the physical and mental challenge of trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro, it’s easy to see why East Africa attracts so many tourists each and every year.

Owner and Director of ZARA Tours, Zainab Ansell, understands the importance of responsible tourism and seeks to blend the desire for an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime vacation with the responsibility of community give-back. Depending on your desired adventure, the best time to visit Africa changes, but those looking for a sunny, warm time, winter is hands down the best choice.

Winter Weather in East Africa

Between December and March you can expect temperatures between 15-28 degrees C or 59-82 degrees F. The rainy season tends to end mid-January and the largest tourist time hasn’t yet begun in Zanzibar, making it a perfect time to visit.

In addition to Zanzibar, Uganda and Rwanda are majestic places to visit in the winter, as well as the Serengeti National Park.

Wildlife Viewing

Winter months are the best time to see the wildebeest migration – a truly breathtaking experience. Nature and wildlife lovers will enjoy the mild weather and great views on the Serengeti. Lake Nakuru in Kenya is where you can get an amazing flamingo viewing in the winter, and seeing primates in Uganda is ideal this time of year as well.

A Pleasant Hike

The weather on Mt. Kilimanjaro stays pretty consistent, other than during the rainy season. A winter hike is drier than the spring, while still offering pleasant weather for this challenging hike. Mt. Meru is a less difficult hike that prepares many hikers for the larger Kilimanjaro while offering amazing views of the mountain and lots of wildlife.
