Journal of Arthroplasty Study Finds Rothman Institute Most Published Orthopaedic Practice in the Country on Hip and Knee Replacement
Ranked First in Top Three Major Orthopaedic Journals
December 21, 2015 – Rothman Institute is the most widely published orthopaedic practice on hip and knee replacement, according to a recent study in the Journal of Arthroplasty. The study, authored by physicians at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, assigned points based on the first and last authors of the study, the institution and the level of evidence in three major orthopaedic journals. During the last five years Rothman Institute published the most studies in all three peer-reviewed publications, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedic and Related Research, and Journal of Arthroplasty. In total, Rothman Institute had 44 more authorships on studies than the next highest group.
“This is a really special recognition for our joint team and research department,” said Alexander R. Vaccaro, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, President of Rothman Institute. “Their dedication to the advancement of the literature and their patients is unparalleled. I’m sure this acknowledgement will only spur them on to do even more in the future.”
“From its founding, Rothman Institute has been an academically oriented organization with a deep commitment to research,” said Matthew S. Austin, M.D., Director of Joint Replacement Services, Rothman Institute. “Our practice takes great pride in publishing the latest evidence-based medicine and the trickle-down effect it has on our fellowship program is substantial. The unique research opportunities available here attract an elite pool of fellowship candidates each year. Residents applying for fellowship in adult joint reconstruction understand we have the key infrastructure in place to conduct high-level research and publish it. We couldn’t be prouder that our hard work in the area of research was recognized by an independent third party.”
As the population continues to age, initial hip and knee replacements, and subsequent revisions will continue to increase, necessitating not only the need for care of this population, but also research advancing the proven science on the subject. Orthopaedic practices offering the opportunities to pursue this research can often be a deciding factor for fellowship candidates who become the attending surgeons of tomorrow.
The authors note, “this study is the first that we are aware of to evaluate academic productivity of attending surgeons associated with adult reconstruction fellowships.”
Rothman Institute was first in authorship analysis in all three journals surveyed (879 articles):
- Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery
- Rothman Institute 18
- Mayo Clinic 14
- Hospital for Special Surgery 9
- Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research
- Rothman Institute 37
- Mayo Clinic 23
- Washington University 23
- Journal of Arthroplasty
- Rothman Institute 79
- Hospital for Special Surgery 62
- Mayo Clinic 42
- Rothman Institute 134
- Hospital for Special Surgery 90
- Mayo Clinic 79
“Conducting high-level research is a time-consuming process, requiring strict dedication, but is very rewarding in the sense it is the apex of medical education and drives improvements in the sub-specialty of adult hip and knee reconstruction, which is then translated to our patients” said Javad Parvizi, M.D., Director of Clinical Research, Rothman Institute. “As an organization we have made it a priority to invest significant resources and infrastructure into our research endeavors. Evidence-based medicine, what we can prove is best and safest for our patients, is our goal. This relentless pursuit of knowledge directly impacts patient care and provides our fellows with invaluable experience that they can apply to their own practice following fellowship.”
